Golden hour in Cyprus is the last hour before sunset, and it is the single best hour of the day to photograph a wedding. The problem is that it moves by more than three hours across the year — from around 16:45 in December to about 20:15 in June — so the ceremony time that works in October will be badly wrong in July.
Here is roughly when the light turns each month, and how to build your day around it.

These are approximate and shift by a few minutes across the island — the west coast around Paphos keeps the sun slightly longer than the east coast around Protaras. Cyprus puts its clocks forward at the end of March and back at the end of October, and both changes move sunset by a full hour overnight.
Golden hour here is shorter than you are used to
This is the part that catches out couples planning from northern Europe. Cyprus sits much further south, so the sun drops towards the horizon at a steeper angle. In Britain a summer golden hour can stretch comfortably past ninety minutes. In Cyprus it is closer to fifty minutes, and in midwinter nearer forty.
Practically, that means the window for those warm, low, flattering portraits is real but narrow. If your timeline slips by half an hour — and wedding timelines do — you do not lose part of the golden hour, you lose most of it.
What happens after the sun goes down
The light does not stop at sunset. For roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes afterwards the sky stays bright and goes soft and blue, while venue lights, candles and festoon bulbs start to read in the frame. It is the best light of the evening for anything with lanterns or string lights, and most couples have gone back to their guests before it arrives.
If your venue has done something beautiful with lighting, it is worth stepping outside for five minutes just after sunset to photograph it properly.
How to work backwards from sunset
Find the sunset time for your actual date, then plan back from it:
- Sunset minus 60 minutes — be free and away from the crowd. This is the window for couple portraits
- Sunset minus 90 minutes — family and group photographs should be finishing, not starting
- Sunset minus 2.5 to 3 hours — a good ceremony start for most of the year
- Sunset plus 25 minutes — the last usable light, good for venue and lighting shots
For a June wedding that means a ceremony at around half past five and portraits at quarter past seven. For an October wedding after the clocks change, the same shape of day starts nearly three hours earlier — ceremony at half past two, portraits at quarter past four.
What to do when the ceremony has to be at midday
Sometimes the time is fixed — a church slot, a municipality appointment, a venue with two weddings in a day. Midday in a Cyprus summer is the hardest light there is, but it is workable:
- Find open shade and stay in it — a colonnade, a tree line, the shaded side of a building
- Backlight rather than front-light: put the sun behind the couple and expose for their faces
- Black and white handles harsh contrast far better than colour does
- Keep the group photographs short. Nobody looks relaxed squinting into the sun in thirty-five degrees
- Then take twenty minutes at the end of the day, when the light has done the work for you
The one rule worth remembering
Choose your ceremony time from the sunset time, not from the lunch time. It costs nothing, it is the easiest decision to get right, and it does more for your photographs than the venue, the season or the equipment ever will.
